Coprates Chasma, part of the Valles Marineris system, has a shallower extension called Coprates Catena. Catena refers to “a chain of craters,” in this case a chain of connected pits of depressions that likely formed due to the collapse of material when extensional tectonics opened Coprates Chasma. In this image we see that the formation of the depressions disrupted surface lava flows. Most of the crust of Mars in this area is likely superposed lava flows, and older flows are exposed as outcrops on the southern wall of the pit in this image.
