Eight years into her three-month mission, the robotic geologist Opportunity offers this view of her adopted home. This mosaic shows the view from the rim of the vast crater Endeavour, a point that is--amazingly--about 30 kilometers away from where Opportunity landed back in 2004. The Earth-based Mars explorers who sent Opportunity to the Red Planet never dreamed she'd last so long, travel so far, or discover so much.
